African Wildlife
Melvin Johansen spent decades working in the prestigious Bay Area Museum of Natural
History creating and preserving wildlife. His accuracy and creativity with the examples
of African Wildlife displayed in the museum gave a strong foundation for his sculptures,
the passion he pursued in the 1960's and 1970's. The Studio is proud to announce
a NEW RELEASE of one of Melvin's favorite African sculptures - the Charging Rhino.
North American Wildlife
Melvin travelled extensively throughout the Americas, documenting and studying the
animals he would then sculpt. His famously lifelike and accurate depictions of the
rugged creatures is a testament to the preservation of wildlife.
Raw Bronze
Raw bronze has been used to cast elegant wall hangings from Melvin's best works.
The animal is set into custom framing elements constructed especially to present
the beauty of the Relief. The high polish seems to animate each regal species as
the bronze glistens from every angle.
Sculpted Stone
There is nothing like the permanence of stone, and marble and granite showcase Melvin's
vision of feline grace. Each sculpture is released from a solid block by hand, with
a chisel and mallet. The long artisan process of slowly bringing a high polish reveals
every unique inclusion in these one-of-a-kind pieces.
